About the
Bride to be
Deborah Mary Meed was born on February 29, 1972 in Duncan, BC. Yes a Leapyear baby. I really enjoyed having my birthday every four years, it always made my real birthday very special. I grew up in Duncan and attended Cowichan Station Elementary for the first two and half years then my Parents split up and Mom, Pam, Bill and I moved to Port Hardy and lived with my Aunt and Uncle (Kathy and Chris Owen) for six months. I attend Robert Scott Elementary for the remainder of the school year. During the summer my parents got back together and we moved back to Duncan. Grade three-Six I was at Alexander Elementary. Grade seven was the big move next door to Quamichan middle School, quite a challenge for us little grade sixers. Grade ten - twelve I was at Cowichan Secondary School.
Following Graduation I attended Malaspina College in Duncan, BC
for one year, and took some general courses (Computer programming, Art,
Psychology etc.). During my next college year I transferred and moved to the
Nanaimo Malaspina College and enrolled in the Recreation Administration two year
diploma program and lived in the dormitories. Living in the dormitories was a
great step for me, it allowed me to live independently for the first time in my
life. I met my best friend (Maid of Honour) Jennifer Tucker in the dorms, we
were roommates and spent all of our non-class time together. This program
was the best thing that I could ever have done for ME in so many ways. I really
enjoyed the courses I was taking, the people I met and I finally felt that I
really had a career ahead of me.
During my first year I decided to take Clogging lessons at the Nanaimo Parks and Recreation Centre with Instructor Barb Guenette. My class was huge, so many people in wanted to learn this style of dance. I attended classes every week and grew to love it. Clogging has given me the opportunity to dance locally, nationally and internationally. Our recreational clogging group has performed in Folk Fest, at local seniors centres and festivals. We travelled and performed in the Austrian Alps Performing Arts Festival and attended numerous weekend workshops and week long clogging conventions. I am even planning on teaching my own class this fall. Visit my website to see more about clogging www.clogbc.com
During my Rec Admin course I had two cooperative education programs (summer work). The first year I worked at the Victoria Language Institute and planned activities for Japanese Students, that was fun but not something I wanted to do for a full time job. During my second CO-Op I worked at Fairfield Seniors Centre (May - Sept). in Victoria. I really enjoyed working with the seniors, planning their activities and events. Following my Co-op at Fairfield New Horizons I based a great deal of my projects on the organization. Never thinking that this is where I would be working nine years later.
Following my second Co-op and during my second year at College I decided that I wanted to go further and go to University. I investigated UVic and Eastern Washington University plus some other institutions out of Province, Eastern Washington University was the most attractive to me. All my Malaspina courses were transferable to the BA, Major in Recreation Management Undergraduate Degree Program and I was finished in a shorter period of time. I overloaded on credit courses during my quarters, and was back in BC 9 1/2 months later. I completed my BA internship back in BC at Fairfield Seniors Activity Centre (New Horizons) during the Summer of 94 and formally Graduated December of 1994. I am still working at the Fairfield New Horizons. 9 years full-time and 4 four months as a student. WOW the time has sure gone by. The Centre has been a great place to learn a lot about what I love to do best "plan, organize and be with people". Visit the Fairfield New Horizons website to see more about where I work.
